I imported 1 hour clips from 3 cameras with the hope of making a multi clip and now each time i have to create proxy media it takes about 8 hours. is there any way around this? should i import 10 minutes at a time into the event editor?

It is always a good idea to avoid working with very long clips - it slows down FCP X considerably.

If it makes sense to split them in shorter segments, do that.

thank you for your reply Luis....... but should import in small batches or is there a way to split the clips now that they are in final cut without losing quality. What would be a decent size ( in minutes) to have my files. i have an imac and a macbook pro

If you already have long clips in the event library, you can just make selections on them, and optionally add keywords to these selections, and work with those "subclips" instead of the whole thing at the same time.

You can create multicam clips from these segments, too.

so i select the same piece of footage ( say 10 minute increments) in all three of my camera angles and simply add a keyword? does that make them appear as smaller clips in the events manager? or do i have to cut/ copy? paste? Im not sure how I get them in the events manager as seperate clips. Im still only a few weeks into final cut X and its confusing sometimes. once I get them into the event manager should I make proxy media out of them at that point or on the import? sorry Luis, I know Im a dweeb!

    Basically, yes.

For the sake of argument, let's say you add the keyword "Part1" to a selected range in a clip. Then this selection will appear as a clip in the keyword collection named "Part1". Keyword collections appear under the event name and can be thought of as like playlists in iTunes, except that you can apply keywords to ranges as well as to whole clips.

To apply a keyword you can hit Cmd-K and enter the keyword, or press the corresponding button. And after the keyword has been applied, you can also apply it to other clips just by dragging them to the keyword collection (again, dragging to a playlist in iTunes comes to mind as a similar procedure)

In the image below, you can see several keyword collections (in blue) inside an event.

brilliant luis, what a cool thing. so once i have my clips under keyword, do i simply 'command' select them from the event list and make a multi cam or is there some way of getting them into the angle viewer?  normally when you make a multi cam clip they are selected in the angle viewer but when i select 'view all clips' the keyword clips dont appear in the angle viewer. whats the last part of the jigsaw please?

i shift clicked and got them in the angle viewer then I command clicked them in the angle viewer and selected them but when i try to make a multicam clip it is not avaolable for selection.

I am not sure what you are trying here. You create a multicam clip from the event browser, not the angle viewer.

The clips must belong to the same event, though. See the picture below where I have selected two segments from two clips in a keyword collection.

hi luis, I have done exactly what you have done and it creates a muti cam clip but when i click the multi cam clip in the event browser the video clips are running 1 after another and not on top of each other. they seem to be ignoring the sync command and simply laying one after another. I dont know what it is because i have made lots of multi cam clips before. I thought it was maybe because the proxy media hadnt finished but i am using the original files. background render is OFF, I cannot think what it could be. I have re started the computer. there are other events that are playing back perfectly, I can see the three videos in sync in the angle viewer. Im baffled?
