HP scanner no longer works in OS X 10.7

I've long been successfully using an HP Scanjet G4010 with my MacBook Pro; for the last two years under OS 10.7.  After a driver update provided by HP, the scanner no longer works; the error message on start-up announces: scanner cannot be initiated / scanner not found.


I erased all the HP software on my machine, and downloaded from HP  installers for the scanner's driver and  application.  However, it turns out that the  driver installer was written for PowerPC chips, not MBP Intel chips.  Earlier versions of OS X ran these old drivers, but 10.7 does not.  Apple has cut me off from HP's driver and software.  HP has not provided a new driver or app.  HP's self-help site has no information about solving this problem.  HP technicians in live chat do not support the Mac. 


How can I use this scanner under 10.7 ?
