It depends on where you obtained iPhoto originally. If it came preinstalled on your Mac use the disks that came with the Mac to reinstall iPhoto. The disk should look like one of these:
If you purchased iPhoto from the App Store the go to the store, click on Purchases and you can download it again.

Unfortunately the disk is no where to be found, I put it in such a safe place (for obviouse reasons) that I cant find the bloody thing.
looks like I'm gonna have to purchase it

You sound like me. Your options are purchase an iLife 11 disk from an 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com or eBay.com or purchase the latest iPhoto from the App Store.
Going the disk route will also give you iDVD and iWeb which are discontinued and no longer offerd by Apple. Then you can apply the necesary updaters from System/Software Update preference pane or the Apple Downloads website.

I have iDVD and IDisk and all the others as I backed up all apps or so I thought. the iMac is about 4 year old and I upgraded the OS as time went on, cant fathom out what happened to iPhoto, its more annoying than anything. thanks for your help tho.
