I have 2 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts in Mail 6.2 (1499), how do I ensure they all leave messages on the server?

I was trying to check with my ISP why they were not sending me notice of my monthly bill. They said they were, and gave me the dates of when the missing ones were sent. They went to check my inbox so that they could re-send the offending messages and said there were no messages there! Hence my question, How do I make sure that messages are left on the server? I have looked in Mail/Preferences, and certainly in the POP accounts the Remove copy from Server is unchecked, on the IMAP accounts, there doesn't appear to be a means of leaving on the server, which, in essence, shouldn't worry me because they are different ISP addresses, (1 = icloud and the other is BT.) and only the one address of the POP account is the one the ISP is sending messages to me.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

One further point, I have just checked on my Webmail and find that it has retained the sent messages which I did on the Webmail system earlier, but there is no Inbox receipts kept on the server!

There is an option in each POP mail account settings to keep the mail on the server.

As I say in my first missive above, that requirement is unchecked!

on the IMAP accounts, there doesn't appear to be a means of leaving on the server,

With IMAP, it's always left on the server.

IMAP does not worry me too much since it is not one of those addresses that are the start of the problem. I have just been on my Webmail page and find that whilst notification messages from this forum are being received, there was a test message I put through to see if it was working as expected and find that the test message was there five minutes ago, but has now vanished!

Maybe I should check the Remove box and see f it is working in reverse!!

I have tried everything to get the Mail working as it should all to no avail. There is nothing being left on the Server, and nothing I do will get anyting to stick there! Equally so, there is one of the imap addresses that steadfastly refuses to operate now! Cannot send from or receive to it!

Is there a way that Mail can be deleted from my system and then reinstalled? I had a look at restore, but I got the impression that it is all or nothing, and since I only want to correct/reinstall Mail can someone let me know if this is possible?

    Thanks

IMAP email accounts can be deleted and added back without losing mail. That's one of their main advantages over POP.

Some POP email providers may not want mail accumulating on their servers, so, it is possible that they may not allow it.

I use iCloud as my email account. I have three Comcast accounts that are set to forward, without retaining, copies, to the iCloud account. That way I don't need to pay any attention to monitoring the POP3 Comcast accounts.

I've never been able to understand why anyone prefers using POP3 in lieu of IMAP.

In the rare times, when iCloud has technical issues, I can always use one of my Comcast accounts as a backup.

I have to say I am truly sick and tired of trying to get this e mail system working. I have tried for a very long time to create an imap account for both my and my wifes normal accounts and do away with the POP accounts. I have been doing hand stands to get the thing working. I lost all my wifes e mails in her Inbox and mine have also gone. The good news is, hers have returned. Mine have entered the ether somewhere!

I have given up entirely on the BT account which was already set up as imap, but that went awol soo I have now completely removed it.

Now I cannot send or receive e mails and keep getting a window up that says the outgoing server is offline. It will never stay online, yet when I go to Mailbox, it is quite clearly online.

Come back Windows and Live Mail, I never have that trouble on the laptop!!

    Cheers

Stop before more havoc is created, backup what is left of you and your wifes POP accounts. Then contact the account provider and inquire whether or not Imap is offered as an option, many do not, and if it is not offered you can't use it with any mail client

I have, indeed, checked with my ISP and they do accept imap accounts. So I followed religiously their instructions, published in their setting e mail information for Mountain Lion website. The instructions were quite simple, and choosing imap was as easy as setting POP mail. however, the net result was that I could never connect with the servers to do anything with the mail. I know they are set up correctly, but when it tried to send mail, after a while an error message came up saying that it couldn't connect and gave me the option of dealing with a "connection doctor" or some such system. This I clicked on and noted that there were an awful lot of servers that it was trying to connect to some of which had been removed when I removed the setup addresses. The ones I wanted were, in fact, showing as connected!! It was obviously checking on anything that had been used in setting a server name from way back when and suffering with a severe bout of indigestion!

I think what really needs to happen is to get iMAC/Mountain Lion to regurgitate all that rubbish which is no longer a requirement, since I am only using three addresses, one from icloud and two from my ISP. I do not need the clogging up from redundant server names, but it seems that the MAC hangs on to everything just in case I may want to go back to them rather than set them from afresh!! I am not feeling too confident in trying to set the address that originally showed the problem, my BT one, and since this morning, it is almost working 100%, I'll leave well alone and see if it settles down. (One step forward and nineteen backwards!!)

    Cheers

One last thing you may want to try. Go to this screen in Mail Preferences and use the minus button to remove all of your previous SMTP settings, then use the minus button to delete all of your Mail accounts, then quit and restart Mail and add your email accounts back.

One thing that doesn't automatically happen when you delete accounts in Mail, are the SMTP settings. Thye have to be deleted separately.

Yes, I have already done that and removed any other extraneous garbage that was lying around. I have to say that at the moment it appears to be behaving itself and I have re-done the account that was causing the problem originally. I'll close this one out now, but I may have to resurrect it again if it decides to go pear-shaped!

    Thanks for your help.
