Ok..So say I want to buy an I phone from someone on E-bay or Craigs list and their posting says something like:

"I just want to get rid of it" or "I want to sell it for personal reasons" "Will Trade for another!!" How do I know they are not trying to off-load a stolen I-Phone, and... how could I check a serial # of any I-phone I might think about buying to be sure I am not buying/recieving stolen property?!!!

You can't check and be sure. There is no reliable place that lists all stolen property - not even the police have access to a complete list for the entire world - so there is no way to be certain when purchasing from any private seller or other unauthorized source. The only way to be certain you're not getting a stolen iPhone is to purchase directly from Apple or an authorized Apple dealer.

    Regards.

I had all of my devices up and working on Find My Iphone. I recently left my ipod behing on a Delta flight and when I went to the app on my Ipad, (within twenty minutes) Ipod was not listed as a registered device.

It worked just fine a few months ago when I had tested it to see how well it really worked. Seems that apple dropped my device off the service. Now, when I really could have used it, when I need it the most, nothing!

Now, I can't clear the info, lock the device, send a message to the thief.....

    I am not impressed

If the device did not already have a passcode lock on it, then whomever found it may have simply gone into the device settings and disabled the find my iPod feature.  Or reset it as new, or simply turned it off.

The remote tracking feature is not, nor ever has been, a security feature.  It is a convenience feature to help find a lost device.  The time to have locked it with a passcode was before it went missing in the first place.

Since the iphone has a unique serial number and also a built in gps... it would only make sense that you could track said phone wherever it is as soon as it is turned on... so why not? I don't get it. I just lost my phone 2 days ago at LAX. find my iphone was on but the phone was turned off immediately so this was useless. Reconsidering if apple is really awesome or not since we pay so much and iphones are still so easily stolen.

Well, there is a trick to hide apps, so you could hide the find my iPhone app. Here's a video explaining how:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eg7lglptKQM#         Or you can just search it yourself if link doesn't work.

And there is a database for lost/stolen iPods and iPhones. All it will do though is keep the thief from selling it at most pawn shops. I'm not exactly sure which site this is, but you will need the IMEI # and/or serial #. Just search reporting stolen/lost iPhones and iPods or iPhone serial #/IMEI # blacklist.

I had an iPod (given from a friend) that was blacklisted and was not able to sell it.

You can at least feel better that your doing something about it. (:

Hiding the Find my iPhone app wont do anything as the feature is enabled through settings>icloud.

Also to those who feel that something else should be done with tracking with a serial number I dont believe it is something Apple should have to do as it is not their fault it was lost/stolen. Also I'm sure if they did do this then there would be an uproar about people being paranoid they are being tracked everywhere they go.

Find my iPhone is a feature kindly provided by Apple to atleast give us users some hope to try and locate/wipe the device. All we can do now is wait for iOS 7 which has added security where to activate the iPhone it would need to be logged in with the iCloud account used on it.

This is so stupid. It is so simple to track a phone through the serial number, that should work. We should be notified when some other appleid is logged in on our phone, only by providing our serial number. Sad.

This is so unfair. OF COURSE a device can be found through the SERIAL #. It is SO easy to discover which apple account is attached to a device with the given SERIAL. I don't know why we still need to face this. There is nothing wring with knowing what account is attached to a serial. If someone logs on a phone, of course the device is somehow linked to this user's data. Yes there is conspiracy. If Apple allow us to track our lost devices through the Serial, they won't sell devices again for those who've been stolen. Sad. But true.

an iphone is not something you gon buy from some random person on ebay. if you want to buy an used device, buy it from someone you know and trust. and come on, if you gon spend money with one, buy a new one. pointless. iphones are not items to be passed like other phones, due to it's durability.

so, this is for me the reason not to buy apple products anymore. technically it would be so easy to track devices with their id - but i guess the reason why it does not "work" is just to force victims to buy new devices.
