Hey guys,

I noticed thaty my MacBook Pro mid 2009, SSD and 8gb RAM, freezes everytime, the issue is continuing since two days ago and thanks to the Console program I've noticed that this string:

1/30/13 6:41:52 PMMail[209]GET /Library/Application Support/Mail/Alias.xml (FAILED), httpStatusCode:503, errorType:100, transactionState:5, txnId:C5A1837E-D1DF-499F-BD83-CAFDBF7D8D01, auto-retries=0, manual-retries=0

Is generated at the same time of the crash, so i believe it's a problem of Aliases in iCloud and the Mail 4.6 client, but i'm not sure.

Anyway, do you have any suggestions?

    Back up all data.

    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:

    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Open

from the contextual menu. A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.

    2. Repeat with this line:

    /Library/Mail/Bundles

This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

Thanks but this one doesn't work, i've found another error in the console:

    1/30/13 10:32:57 PMcom.apple.audio.coreaudiod[89]Wed Jan 30 22:32:57 Andrea-Carnimeos-MacBook-Pro.local coreaudiod[89] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

And here I paste the whole console log:

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

    • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    Thanks for your support.

I've tried the step 1, same freeze.

I've tried the step 2, after almost two hours a black view came out with "Quartz Composer" written on the display ( so the computer was frozen also in safe mode), so I reeboted.

Now i'm using the Mac and it seems working fine, but I still have to wait few more hours before saying that the problem is solved.

Nope, same problem here. None of the troubleshooting listed up here worked for me. My Mac still freezes after almost 1 hour.

I believe there is some kind of error into the audio, because the Console gives me these errors:

Can you reproduce the freeze by starting the screen saver?

  • 8. Re: MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 Freezes because of an alias in Mail
Andrea Carnimeo Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I don't know what do you mean, but for example today I left the computer turned on for about 5 hours. When I came back to the desk the computer was in sleep mode, then I moved my finger on the trackpad and the screensaver was on, so I started using the computer and I felt that there was something wrong.

So, the computer freezes "slowly", I mean, every ability of the Mac slow down and freeze. Functions such as close, or minimize a window, turn down/up the volume, open a file or app, dim the brightness and everything else. The only thing that works is the cursor, nothing else. I just have to force the restart everytime, and I think that I will format the Mac.... I'm giving up...

Apple I never expected something like that from you...

EDIT: I won't install Lion or Mountain Lion because I consider Snow Leopard the LAST REAL Apple's OS. The rest is just garbage for me.

I'm not Apple. Try selecting a different screen saver in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.

I know you are not Apple, you don't even look like a Steve Jobs relative

Do you really think it's the "screensaver" the problem? It freezes also when i'm using the Mac normally!

I made a suggestion. You are free to ignore it.
