Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Jan 30, 2013 1:26 PM in response to turingtest2by writerrgirl,It's been about 2 weeks since I got the new laptop, the old one with all my original music/backup Itunes library info is back at home, 3 states away.
I did doublecheck this computer's files, but it only shows the original installation of itunes, since I had to download it on the new machine. This one doesn't have any backups, and for some reason doesn't show one for the original file transfer either.

Jan 30, 2013 1:32 PM in response to writerrgirlby turingtest2,Did you "upgrade iTunes" on this machine?
Was your library there before you upgraded?
If so then search for all files of the form *.itl - if there is more than one then try the fix as given above.
If not then it sounds like your library is 3 states away on your old computer, and only there... See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for a workaround.
