My iPhone 4 has no sound. I can not hear my music or anything. When I go to the settings>sounds I can hear the ringtones when I click on the volume control but when I am on my homescreen or anywhere else there is no sound. I can get sound from my earbuds though, even the music, but when I take out the earbuds there is no sounds at all. I have checked the silent switch and that is off. When I click the up volume button the ringer box appears but does nothing. Same if I click my down volume button. I have tried resetting my phone and that isn't helping either. Any advice?

Flip the Ring/Silent switch on the side of the phone from silent (red showing) to ring.

No, that is up. Meaning that it's on ringer.

I have had the same problem no sound on my speakers while playing apps, music, YouTube etc. The only time it did work was during calls on loud speaker and the ring tones. The reason for this that the dock connector thinks its connected to an external audio device and thinks its playing sound through that. This is the best fix/ solutions I could find http://iphonenosound.com/ it has about 9 steps on how to fix from restall to how to clean the dock. It helped me so hope it helps you:)

Today I went mountainbiking in the rain, iPhone in my backpack. I didn't get rained on directly, but the inside of the bag got damp, and so was the screen of my phone. After a few hours I realized the sound was dead, except through headphones. I read pretty much everything I could and tried all options suggested, including cleaning headset jack with q-tips and everything else on iphonenosound.com etc. Nothing worked, except this (and I didn't read this suggested anywhere): I put the room heating on max, placed my phone on the shelf 5 cms above the radiator, and 15 mins later: hey presto ! problem solved Hope this helps.

Actually, a very bad idea, which is why you didn't see this suggested by anyone.  Applying heat like this (or with a hairdryer) will grossly exceed the max temp spec for the iPhone and cause thermal damage, which may not be immediately apparent.  It also can accelerate corrosion caused by moisture that wasn't completely removed.  Don't be surprised if your phone takes a dump in the near future.

Hmm, thanks for pointing that out. I only let the top end, with the headphone part, stick out over the shelf.

Fingers crossed, hope it stays alive...

I had the same problem as well for nearly 3 months.

I had tried bring the Iphone into my phone carrier and they sent me to the AppleStore. When I brought it to them they hooked it up to the diagnostic machine and they told me just to restart the Iphone from the factory settings.

This didn't work either. To complicate things more, other "solutions" seem to only yield temporary success. These temporary solutions included: blowing compressed air into every port, various restart combinations, various factory restore methods.

I had nearly given up until I stumbled upon a support post on Apple's website that finally yielded success.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630

The solution for me is listed as line 7, which reads:

"Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris."

Apparently, this cylinder shaped, mesh area is in some way tied to what triggers the headphones/speaker selection. I am not sure how, but I can say that after gently brushing it out my sounds are working again; specifically my music is now able to play directly off the speakers and my Iphone apps all play their sounds agian.

Hope this helps you as well!

Iphone4 - No sound or voice when call connected

Is anyone up for the challenge on this one? I’ve tried everything here:

    • The microphone and speaker works using the microphone on voice memos
    • The speaker works for music and to pick up voicemail.
    • There is no ringing sound when making a call, I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me      when the call is connected.

    I have:

    • Cleaned the docking connection of any dirt/fluff
    • Cleaned the headphone jack chamber
    • Cleaned the receiver
    • Restored on factory settings
    • Restored to factory settings in DFU mode

    All to no avail!!

I  have not taken it apart to put a piece of plastic on the audio chip as  suggested here because I don’t think that will help as the speaker and  microphone work. It is outside warranty. Handing it back to Apple is the  easy option but I can upgrade soon and anyway, I am convinced some  fantastic individual out there has the solution or at least tell me what  is going on!!

Just went through the same problem and tried all the solutions suggested and after row of dissapointments I found out the way to fix the problem. Blowing into all the openings of my iPhone didn't work but what helped wa sucking with my mouth the jack opening. Right away my iPhone started playing Internet radio out of its speakers. I guess it was dirty and the phone thought the jack was plugged in. Good luck

I'm not sure if your issue will be resolved as easily as mine, but all I had to do was lock my phone. Double click to display the "now playing" screen, then play a song and press the buttons to adjust the volume. After that the display was working properly.
