I have a gmail account that I want to access using apple mail.  I also want copies of the messages to remain on the gmail server.  Apple mail defaults to IMAP when setting up a new account.  When I logon to gmail via the web, my inbox is empty.  I can't seem to find a way to keep copies of the messages on the server.  Thinking that I want to use POP in order to keep copies of the messages on the gmail server but I'm not sure.  Google recommends using IMAP and not POP.  I'm using version 10.8.2.
