I have a Canon MF4450. I have all the updated drivers from Apple and from Canon, but when I seek to 'add' it on as a printer, there is no entry for it - it is not recognized by the machine. What can I do to fix this?

So how is the printer connected? Have you looked at similar questions to the right ----->

The cable could be at fault. Wouldn't be the first time.

To check, open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and in the left column, select USB. The top right pane you will see all the USB busses in the Mac. If the cable is okay then the printer will be showing under one of the USB busses. If you don't see the printer, then try another USB cable. When the printer does appear under one of the USB busses then you will be able to add the printer.

So did the MF appear in the USB view of System Information? Until it does you won't be able to add the printer.

And FYI - do not bother with downloading the driver sig has provided a link to. It does not contain drivers for the laser-based Canon devices. It is only for the Canon inkjet models.

Are you connecting the printer directly to the Mac or using some sort of USB hub?

For the USB printer that is seen, did you try this USB cable with the MF?

One thing I do have to mention is that other users have had the same issue as you. The printer fails to appear on their 10.8 Mac but does work on another Mac, generally running an older version of OS X, and also works fine on a PC. What resolved their issue was buying a new USB printer cable.

Thanks for trying the new cable. At least now it can be ruled out as a cause. This result would then suggest the printer at fault but with it working on Windows then it would also rule it out.

So like you I don't know why the MF is not appearing in System Information. For your reference I have taken a screen grab of my System Information view showing the MF4580 connected to the USB High-Speed Bus.

Was 10.8 a new installation on this Mac or was it an upgrade from 10.7/10.6?

Do you know anyone with a Mac? It would be interesting to check what happens with that Mac. You would not need to install the driver. Just connect it via USB and then open System Information.
