In his defense this thread is 28 pages long.

Didn't someone make a list of things we've tried so far? I might be dreaming.

Yeah, good point, it would take a while to read in one setting.

    BRAAP

Sorry bout that....I replied before i went back through some of the thread and saw your request for prayers.

BTW, this morning 1.76 "Other" gigs came back. I went into Settings General Usage and deleted video and music again. they went away again.

I don't know what is going on...This is not consistent.  I think I may need prayers too.

So I bit the bullet and did a reset of the phone and started fresh.  My 2.8g other is now 0.6.  I am not a huge gamer.  I play temple run.  I use FB.  That is it.  So I don't believe the notion that it is normal to have 2-4g of other.  There are flaws in the OS as it has progressed over the years.

It was/is painful to reset.  I had to restore my favorites on phone.  Put my ringers back.  Put certain text alerts back.  Add my passwords back to everything (nest, pandora, etc).  Put notifications back.  Rehook up to bluetooth in cars.

But all in all... it took me about 2 hours.

I have been using the same profile from my 3G to my 4 and then to my 5.  So using same profile for several years.

There was something cathartic about starting fresh .  And if i have to do this every 4 years... then that's technology.  I did lose my high scores on Temple Run. LOL.

(btw, I did rename my phone, did a back up and saved it... just in case I want to go back to it... which I can't see why I ever will).

That's the reason I didn't want to do it. Progress in apps, and all things like that and what you've mentioned.

Did you try deleting your message conversations after updating to iOS 6.1? To see what difference that made for you?

I think you could have saved your progress from some apps using one of the programs/applications people have mentioned on here. iExplorer for example, I think allows you to view each App's documents folder, so you can copy out the files from there and put them on a new/different phone and everything be there still... I've never tried this personally, so don't know whether it works properly or not.

If you do have an hour or so to spare, you could backup your phone as it is now (then move/rename). Restore your backup from before, use iExplorer to extract the Apps' documents. Restore your "new phone" backup again. Then copy the documents back into the Apps using iExplorer..

No worries, you're on the "other" prayer chain, (no pun intended). ;-)

Hopefully soon we'll have resolution to this issue, either from our own efforts or via iOs updates. If you stumble across any other possible solutions or remedies, please share.

I saw you were going to update to 6.1 - did you? Did deleting messages help you at all? Just curious.

Yeah, I did update to 6.1 prior and deleted imessages.  Didn't do anything.

But I am also the type that deletes messages when I get them, other than very common people like my wife... I let that one go on.  I don't have pages of messages.

As far as iExplorer... I'm not that savy....  and I'll just screw something up.

Like I said though.... It is cathartic.

It's like a bowel cleanse... except it isn't. LOL.

    r-m,

Yeah, finished the 6.1 update, but haven't attempted to cleanse again, hopefully will have time tonight to fiddle.

By the way, wrote to iExplorer regarding the issues I was having, ("other" and their software crashing and not showing "messages"), got a response with lots of detail, (excellent customer service), will share the response to our "other" issue after I apply their recommendations.

    Thanks,

    Paul.

So here's my concern, and maybe you can see if it affects you.  When I had my 3gs(have 4S now), the pictures I would take are given a number as all pictures on all devices do. As the years have go by, that number has gotten pretty far up there, in fact one of the last pictures I took is img6229.

If I restore as new then the img # would be reset to 01, which then my computer would think is a duplicate.  Obviously I never bothered to re-name every image but I'd hate to accidentally throw pictures away when the computer asks whether to keep duplicate or replace.  I could see myself hitting replace by accident and then start slowly replacing all my old pictures.

The only other option would be to take all the pictures off the computer now and put on another hard drive but that doesn't seem all that wonderful.  I'll also add that I'm not all that computer savvy and maybe when restoring to new the phone will still have some kind of filename for the new pictures that make it differ from the originals i.e img 09 taken with 3gs and image 09 taken with 4S...

    Hmm that's odd.

Software is usually pretty good at renaming duplicate files. If there's a file named img01 on your computer and you're importing a photo with the same name, it will probably name it img01(01) or something similar.

I haven't tested it, this is the main reason for me not wanting to restore as new, that and maybe my contact list.

Just noticed my battery life since iOs 6.1 is dropping 2-4 times faster now!! NOT GOOD!

Will be restoring back to 6.01, then trying to restore as new and hopefully keep 6.01 till Apple pulls their head out and quits adding more bugs than they are fixing!!! Frustrating...
