Q: sync without iCloud?

After I have installed Mountain Lion, I have had a number of sync issues via iTunes and for a while I thought these were the same reasons I could not sync my notes from my iPhone with the fancy new application on my Macbook.....until I came across this article informing me that it is no longer supported in Mountain Lion(!!!!): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4191  (relevant part half way down under Syncing Notes with iTunes and OS X Mountain Lion v10.8)

I am a traditionalist when it comes to privacy and data security. I like to keep my data on my hardware behind firewall, only upload data onto the web that I genuinly want to share with others (...even to the point of using POP mail account). I have no intention to use iCloud (it seems I am not alone in this, sure you all read the comments by Steve Wozniak http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/routers-storage/apple-co-founder-thinks -the-cloud-will-be-horrendous-1091188).

The way things go, I will end up with 6 different Mac devices at home that will stop talking to each other unless I feed all the data into the cloud.

Does anyone know a way to sync everything just on your home network, without having to upload stuff to the web? Why cannot we have our own homeCloud? Any suggestions welcome (including from Apple)......Hope I will not have to abandon my Mac devices and consider (dare I even say) Windows!?

    Totally agree with Z001.

I also want to sync INSIDE my home lan.

I have 5 Apple devices and since iCloud I can't sync my notes!

Dear Apple: please give us an option to sync our notes locally as before.

Perhaps a good programmer can make a program or script to do that (or something like extract the notes from the iTunes backup and insert in the Mac notes).

I recently went to my favourite Apple shop and told a guy there about this notes problem. He looked a bit puzzled, then started iTunes and showed me the check box for switching on and off syncing notes. He still uses iTunes 10.x - and there, it's possible to sync notes locally, without iCloud!

You can download iTunes 10.7 here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Now I searched the web and found that it seems to be difficult to downgrade the iTunes library from V11 to V10. I didn't yet dare to do it because I'm afraid to screw up my whole iTunes incl. the app store account.

Intesting. So it's not a Mountain Lion issue, per se. It's an iTunes 11 issue?

    Will look into that.

    Thanks!

Too bad. I like iTunes 11.

    Hello Keksi,

    what you write is interesting:

are you certain that the person who showed you the "check box for switching on and off syncing notes" was running Mountain Lion?

On all the Mountain Lion installs I have tested about this issue, the  "check box for switching on and off syncing notes" wasn't available in iTunes 10.x (nor is it available now in iTunes 11).

Would it be possible for you to double-check whether the iTunes 10.x install on which you saw the  "check box for switching on and off syncing notes" was running on Mountain Lion, or on some previous Mac OS X version?

    Thanks---

OK, I'll double-check it and report here.

Hi if this is any use, I have itunes 11.01 and my ipad and ipod touch all sync with notes. Go to settings on ipad and ipod touch, go down to Notes then on the right you will see Default Account put that onto icloud and every thing should sync fine, hope fuly. It took me a bit of working out, also on your notes app when opening notes in the top left hand corner you see 'Accounts' click on that and you have three options click on icloud then you have all your synced notes

    Hi rob board,

This topic is about people who want or need to sync notes locally without using iCloud. That is the option that apple has removed.

It is, as you say, possible to synchronize notes through iCloud, which is what I believe your instructions would do. What we want is a way to synchronize notes locally, without using iCloud or any online access or cloud services of any kind (including Google) at any stage.

Your suggestion will work, though, for people who are ok with using cloud services.

It happens   - If Apple would stop changing and eliminating features that work just fine there'd be less confusion overall!

OK, I checked it. On this machine, Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) is running. :-( Sorry for that! So for now, syncing notes running Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) is only possible via iCloud.

Another idea: doesn't there exist an IOS "Notes" app that administers its own set of notes (= txt files) and syncs them to a folder on the mac? That would do the job.

I'm with those of you who would like to simply sync my Notes over my own network/Wifi.  I have several reasons: sensitive data, the fact that Apple "owns" whatever information goes onto their Cloud, recent hacks by China, and the fact that my internet connection is not always reliable.

At this point, I'm concerned Apple is not going to address the issue, so I've been looking for something to replace Notes - though I prefer to stay with original Apple programs whenever possible.

How do you think your computers synced before iCloud? Prior to iCloud your contacts and calendars synced via MobileMe which you might think of as iCloud beta. Or maybe iCloud is MobileMe v2. There are new features in iCloud but Apple hasn't suddenly pulled something new out of its hat.

You can sync without the internet/MM or iCloud. I don't have a internet conection at home I use a cable when I get home I plug my iPhone 3G in to my MacBook Pro and iTunes 10 I store my data local and use a 3rd part sync program.  I also don't like the fact that any data at a data center be it iCloud or any other datacenter can be looked at/accessed but and one with "root" user access do I trust root?????

"...I store my data local and use a 3rd part sync program."

...and there in lies the bulk of the rub.  Without jumping through 3rd party hoops or building another database, and loosing the ease of just plugging in and hitting sync, I can not sync Notes and Tasks now without using the cloud.

If you have discovered a seamless 3rd party that will allow you to use Apples Notes and Tasks and get us back to the simple plug and sync, PLEASE let us know who and what is able to do it with Mountain Lion and the latest iTunes that most of us blindly switched to.

For those of you who are still looking, I am using MarkSpace's Missing Sync and Fliq Notes and Fliq Tasks.  They appear to work but I have had some setup and reliability issues, and it requiers a second sync opperation beyond iTune's Calendar and Contacts.

Hi, I've just discovered this issue as well.

I really want to sync notes locally using sync through cable or wifi.

I don't want to sync notes using iCloud for the same reasons discussed in earlier posts here: I'm worried about security, I don't like being FORCED to use iCloud; iCloud is NOT where the future is at, I don't like the fact that OS procedures can be changed by Apple without due notice being given (users are just supposed to discover these things??).

Usability has been taken away in other ways in Mountain Lion.

    • The hand tool has disappeared from Preview.

    • The scroll arrows are no longer available in application windows.

    • Software Update thru App Store on desktop Macs doesn't show file size prior to download nor allow pausing of download.

Mountain lion, despite its nice new features is in some ways more like a downgrade.
