WD external drives have a history of mounting problems in these forums.
Their bare drives seems fine, so it's probably got to do with their enclosures. At any rate, you can search it out here and might want to make a different choice of external drive or change the enclosure.

I have a lot of WD Drives, 13 and counting, and they've been great. Problems with several Seagates however.
This particular drive has been running and booting fine. Until the update!

2 Internal in iMacs and 1 External, brand new. The Internal Seagates were what caused Apple to have a recall a couple of years back.
Seagates I've noticed are noisy, making chugging and clicking noises. Quite irritating.
