Have you asked him to do a reset of the iPad by holding down the Home and Power buttons simultaneously until the apple logo appears?

Unfortunately, that didn't help. I should also note that his Outlook client will recieve the message sent from the POP3 account on the iPad and that the sent folder from the POP3 account shows the message was sent.
