I updated from ios6.0.2 to ios6.1 and i lost feature to switch between 3G and 2G. 3G consumes battery a lot and sometime I keep my phone on 2G to save battery. How can it be done now? Is there anyway to go back to ios6.0.2?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1

I have the same problem. This is not fair by Apple. Because operators want to shut down the 2G we will have to stick with 3G only which is terrible in terms of battery, drop calls, voice quality, etc..Only data is better. I hope that apple brings back the 2G only feature. Otherwise I will go back to 6.0.2. Shame!

The decision on whether to include this or not is carrier specific. Many carriers are shutting down their 2G networks or have plans to do so in the very near future.

See the manual for iOS 6.1, page 135 (emphasis mine):

Enable or disable 3G: Using 3G loads Internet data faster in some cases, but may decrease battery performance. If you’re making a lot of phone calls, you may want to turn 3G off to extend battery life. This option is not available in all areas.

There is no way to downgrade to 6.0.2 without hacking and possible permanently efing up the phone.

Let me inform apple experts that HSPA has a total global penetartion of 34%. In US is more than 60%. So I hope that the above will be read by someone and understand how important is to enable the capability to switch off 3G.

Let me inform you that your understanding of this problem is bass ackwards.  This is an issue only where there IS HSPA "penetration."  It occurs when there is poor 3G signal and the user now can't switch to GSM/2G.

When there is NO HSPA signal, the phone ALWAYS defaults to GSM/2G without a need for manual switching.
