Last week I discovered that I could simply navigate to the backup folders on my TM hard drive just as you would navigate through any other nest of folders.

I was told that this was potentially dangerous, but assuming that I was only copying items to my desktop, I can't see a problem.

Obviously I wouldn't add to or remove items from the backup folders.

Simply copying the odd file that I need seems quite harmless.

Is it OK to copy as long as I don't alter the backups in any way? (Copying does not alter).

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Little knowledge... many opinions.
