I need to restore my emails from a Time Machine back-up. But I can't find where they are located. It used to be (I think) that messages were located in the Library/Preferences/Mail folder. But no longer...

Who can help me?

Thanks!

Instead of going to ~/Library/Mail folder to restore mails, there's an easier way to restore mails. First, open Mail app and then, open Time Machine application, so you will access to the Time Machine interface to restore the mails you want

    ~/Library/Preferences/Mail folder

hold the option key and Go from the drop down menu. This is the user Library.

The odd thing is that there is no Mail folder in my /Library/Preferences folder

You are looking on /Library/Preferences, and you won't find Mail on that folder. Open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences/Mail to go to your Mail folder

It's in the user library, ~/Library/

    The location is:

    ~/Library/Mail/V2/

Underneath that are subfolders; some for mail accounts (where IMAP is stored), and then Mailboxes for all your local mail.

Restoring via Time Machine this way is madness though :-)

Why did I put ~/Library/Preferences? Thanks for clarifying that and sorry for the mistake

Thanks, I know that, just pointing out which Library the OP needs to be in.

Time Machine is madness however you use it, it's a possible backup hidden in a maze, must be made in China

Easiest way to find the right place is to use command-shift-G to "go to location" in Finder and paste that ;-)

Personally, I've found Time Machine to be great.  For restoring documents and folders, it's fantastic.  I've had a few times when I've deleted entire directories, etc., and then decided 9 months later I wanted it back.  Every single time I've tried to do this, I've had what I wanted in 3 minutes time.  It's flawless.

That said, the starfield animations and all that can be a bit much

Why do you keep posting to me,

I'll make it clear. I am NOT the OP of this post. I know where the library is and I do NOT use Time Machine.

    OK?

Thanks! Now I know where it's stored on my local drive.

But now I need to locate the Mail folder on my TIme Machine back-up.

    How do I do that?

    Appreciate all your help!

It is in the same place on your TM backup.

Ya don't feel so bad,  I was just following suit, and wasn't thinking beyond the User Library.

Nice to know somebody is paying attention.  Maybe we can give Csound1  the greenie for stepping in!

I was posting to you because I was RESPONDING to you.

You first said this "Thanks, I know that, just pointing out which Library the OP needs to be in."

To which I replied, which would be useful to other folks who may come across this, or to the OP if he reads subthreads.

And then you replied with this "Time Machine is madness however you use it, it's a possible backup hidden in a maze, must be made in China "

To which I posted my own anecdote, which is a counterpart to your comment that Time Machine is "madness however you use it."

I understand you're not the OP of this post.  Is there a rule that I should only reply to the OP and not add comments to subposts, when I deem it worthy?

    OK?
