Purchase a retail iLife 08, iLife 09 or iLife 11 package from any software vendor and install the iDVD app. Amazon still has it for sale at a reasonable price.

Apple no longer sells iDVD or the iLife retail disc.

I think you're an excellent canididate to watch iMovie's video tutorial You can locate it at:http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/

You need some sort of burn software to burn the video to a DVD which then will be readable by any DVD player; iDVD is the best because you can add cool customizable menus, etc. Then there is Roxio Toast ($$) - excellent software, but no customizable anything. Also Burn, a free burn software (google for it) and there are others. I've tried several and still prefer to use iDVD and Roxio Toast.

Hey John, i just bought the new imac 2012 late release model. i noticed that it came with some of the apps from ilife such as garageband and imovie. it did not however come with idvd becasue it seems as though apple has discontinued the product. My question is, would purchasing the older version of ilife interfere with the new version that came with the imac but excluded the idvd portion of the software. as it stands right now, i pretty much cant do much in terms of making dvds until i get a dvd making software. a few have been recomended but i am leaning more towards getting idvd. would i be risking any complication by doing so, is there anywhere i can just get the idvd software for free (the original version i mean).

rkaufmann87: i checked out the videos you suggestted but i still need the software to do what the videos are saying.

babowa: is there anyway i can just install the idvd portion of the ilife 11' package rather than the whole thing.

    help help help.

    thanks

You should be able to by using custom install during the installer process; when you get to that window, simply uncheck anything you don't want or, depending on the default settings, check everything you want to install. Just in case you want to install the suite: did you install the iMovie, etc. or is it still sitting at the app store? If you haven't, simply don't. I still have mine sitting there ready to be "accepted" - and they shall remain in that state indefinitely because I prefer my versions from the retail disk.

yes, imovie is already installed. good to  know that i can skip the things i dont want and install just the things i need. is there a problem with imovie being already installed?

It shouldn't as long as you don't want to install it over what you have. I'm not 100% sure though because I did not do it that way - I simply ignored the app store and installed my  entire  retail version. When the installer is open, you can easily backtrack if necessary, so pick the custom option and then pick what you want and see if there is an error message or if it proceeds with the install.

i just bought the new imac 2012 late release model

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)

Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.

IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.

I use iMovie 06 and iDVD 11 on a Mac Pro with 2 DVD drives.

Just curious: does Apple still have some stock of iLife disks? I read in one thread that they've been out for a while now?

They are still making new ones, sales are good.  All so users can buy iDVD.
