Don't assume that we know what you were doing in Excel. Some of us have been away from Excel for so long that we don't know what's there anymore.
Extending a formula down the column or across the row is called Fill. When you Select a cell, there's a little circle in the lower right hand corner that is called the Fill Handle. Drag the Fill handle to extend the formula in the selected cell.
You can also Copy and Paste to propagate your formula. You can Copy 1 cell and Paste it to a larger selection.

I just realized why the Fill Handle wasn't working. Or I think it's the reason: the top cell with the formula in it was a header cell, above the bold line. So I couldn't drag from the corner. when I copied and pasted the fomula lower down, I could then drag the fill Handle and extend it to the entire column. Thanks for your help!

That's right, the Header row is for column titles, mainly. If you don't need titles, you can delete the Header Row.
