Over time, Macs are the most inexpensive computers to purchase, by far.

None of the Macs I have ever purchased since 1985 ever failed. I still use an eleven year old PowerBook on occasion, though these days it is generally to help others with theirs. It spent most of its life being abused by airport security in weekly business travel. It's on its third battery.

Consider the number of people here asking questions regarding Macs that are still running Tiger or PowerPC programs that have not been written for at least seven years.

Most people prefer to spend $500 every year and a half for a piece of junk Windows PC than twice as much for a Mac that will easily last at three or four times as long. Apparently they didn't do well in math.

That is just Bull. They do not last any longer then any other make or model computer.

I think they are totally worth it for the person who just wants to use a computer without becoming a computer hobbist.  For the computer hobbist, building your own is not going to be cheaper but it could be more satisfying.

I can build a Windows PC for much less then any iMac costs. But then it wouldn't be in one case either that can't be opened and or expanded to, Thank God.

    baloney

    a 27" IPS display is $800

    a i3770 i7 chip is $500

    a Z77 motherboard is $200

    a decent case is $50

    a decent powersupply is $50

a good webcam, speakers, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse is $150

8 gig of 1600 Mhz memory is $50

    a 1TB drive is $100

    a copy of windows 7 64bit pro is $150

So that's like $2000 bucks and a 27" imac with only processor upgrade is about the same.  Comparing a wal-mart $500 computer to an Imac is just silly.  You want to build something of the same quality, try it yourself.

I thought the OP was asking if an iMac is worth it. Not how do I build a (Window) computer on the cheap.

IT"S WORTH IT!!! YOU"LL LOVE IT!!!!

Now let's stop all of the trolling.

I bought my iMac in late 2007 as a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. As of now I replaced the hard drive once to a 1TB because the old one went bad, up graded the memory to 4 Ghz. I have never had a virus, no crash (other than the hard drive going bad) and have taken it from Tiger to Moutain Lion. I was a windows person that replaed my PC's every two years if I was lucky it lasted that long, with virus attacks and crashes all the time. I will never go back to a PC again. Now EVERYTHING in my home is Apple.

Yes,  if you want a fashion accessory: the glued together, unserviceable, with all proprietary drive crap that's out now.  Not quite yet, but soon to be a 27" iPad on a stand.

And with such a cramped case and only one fan, I don't see much longevity in the cards. Heat will kill these things.

I understand the vaue of building a systsm, when you take on the responsibility of managing component compatibility and device drivers.  I would probably build a system if I wanted to play serious games.

But having built tower systems and trying to match hi-res-capable display drivers, Linux certainly is a minefield and the Windows system would be something I re-installed every month due to issues.

I love the stability of my MBP and the integrated hi-res utilities such as screen zoom.  Worth the money for being quite stable?  Yes.

Not sure what issues you have but I don't have never had with Windows.

    sysinfo install date.PNG

And I don't run any anti virus programs. But then I do use good parts.

Mac users want to USE and be productive with their Macs. Not constantly tinker with or build a Mac.

And Mac users do not want to chase viruses and spyware, either.
