To be honest, I understand the arguments for it not running on the original iPad, but I'm still disapointed, its not that old and again there is suppport for the iPhone 3GS. The problems with RAM, CPU and Screen Resoution are surely not insurmountable!?

The Apple store were blissfully unaware of the 12 day window. I did ask.

And the helpfulness of your second point has somehow evaded me.

Interesting comments. Have you ever seen a classic car, all tuned up and cleaned up for best performance, and have you ever seen a classic car club that helps members with ideas to improve their classic cars?

Well maybe it is time for the. Classic iPad 1 club.  For example, is ios 4 or 5, best for it, then how do we get it there. And can we keep it tuned. For those preferring to stay at ios 5, how s it best to sty at ios5, eg. With or without further updates. And how best if at all o handle security patches.

We have classics now, how do we make them the best they can be!  Many of us ay ave old backup images, for example.... Not sure if we can use them to go retro! And for those that want to upgrade to new iPads, be able to get reasonable value for the classics.  Will iPad 1s be Edsels or Ford Mustangs, or Mercedes of the classic world?

And will some of the app developers support us by keeping a version I their app code compatible for us? Yes, no, ...

The story is just beginning for the "classic" iPad1, .... with the help and guidance of some of the level 4s, 5s, and 6s here let's make it a great story!

Hopefully this will get a little support from some of you.

    Cheers

One of the problems is that iOS 5.1.1 was a bit of a stretch for the iPad 1.

Perhaps Apple might consider making a version of iOS available for iPad 1 users that is more appropriate to its capabilities? I'd want it!

I too have the iPad 1, both sides of the argument have merit. My wife had purchase this iPad 1 64g wifi only in early 2011, I guess it is our fault for not doing our home work on the new model that came out , a little time after we got ours. That being said maybe a modified version of iOS6 for the iPad1 would be a compromise. Ours is in almost pristine condition, and a lot of fun to use. While I am typing this on my iMac, I am listening to a podcast on the iPad. It is just a handy piece of hardware. I would hate to have this thing be outdated so quick. I know a lot of other iPad 1 owners would like to feel they got value for there money. And have something that would have a longer shelve life.

Could not agree more, I tend to wonder if the late Mr Jobs would have agreed with this decision... The iPad Mini has a similar display resolution to the original iPad and it runs iOS6... I guess that blows the resolution argument out of the water!

Yes, because display resolution is the sole indicator of how powerful a system it is.

The ipad mini is comparable to the iPad2, which does run iOS 6

"The late Mr Jobs" and Apple have been doing this for years. The fact that you don't like something a decision they made does not mean "the late Mr jobs" wouldn't have agreed to it. If you disagree, please do something about it and let Apple know: http://www.apple.com/feedback

After a few months, it now seems clear that Apple has complete dropped any update for the iPad 1.

I am personally fine with iPad 1 not getting iOS 6 but Apple should have continued to upgrade and improve iOS 5 for its "old" users. I am still using iPad 1 and I am generally happy with it but clearly I would have liked Apple not to stop support before the OS was more bug-free than it is today. Safari and some other system app crash regularly which is annoying. As a point of comparison, Microsoft supported Windows XP for 10 years with software updates and the latest builds are extremely stable.

To the least, Apple should let iPad 1 users upgrade Safari separately from the system if they plan to support upgrading the system, given the stability issues of Safari and the fact that a web browser needs to be updated over time to cope with evolving web standards.

My expectations were that Apple would do more for their customers than they did, though I recognize they are a for profit organization and can do what they want to maximize their profit. As a customer, I will definitely draw from this experience next time I make a purchase.

What upgrades and improvements are appropriate for the original iPad?  Mine works great.

As I said, frequent crashes in Safari is clearly the #1 issue. Second thing on my list would be sluggish interface, in particular virtual keyboard where keys sometimes just key stuck for a few seconds. Last thing, a bit less frequent, would be crash while changing general settings, or in the general interface.

As a number of people commented in the thread, all those issues appeared the day I upgraded to iOS 5. Hence I surmise they are linked to bugs or bad implementations in iOS5 which Apple never bothered to correct.

this is a terrible decision by Apple.  It means the ipad 1, which was sold 2 yrs ago, will become useless.  As Aps are upgraded to ios6, they will have to be removed  from ipad 1.  Ap developers never keep the older versions available, so fewer and fewer things will work.   I am thinking looking at the Kindle and Android devices now.  Been strictly Mac for 15 years, but this non-customer oriented decision turns me away. Steve woudl be rolling in his grave.

You are incorrect.  However, it is your right to purchase other products if you believe that they suit your desires better than the iPad.

    What is he incorrect about?

And while I doubt you can change the decision, to suggest he should look elsewhere is really a poor message to send.

Telling people they should by the tool that best meets their needs is a poor message to send? Why?

Having been a strict Apple user for over 28 years, and a computer user for 44 years, you should try to get a grip on how the technology just keeps on accelerating. I speak as one who threw a £7500 Mac IIfx over the wall at the local dump after the local schools refused it for free.
