Can you provide us with some more details to help troubleshoot this?
It sounds like it's an early 2009 or late 2008 iMac. From the Finder, if you click on the Apple menu and choose About This Mac, you can get some details...clicking on the More Info button in this window will reveal the others.
What Mac OS are you running? (Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard?).
How much RAM is installed in your iMac?
What's your hard disk size, and how much free space is available on it?
Do you have a Time Machine external drive backup?
If you can provide some more details we'll be able to help.
