What do I do with my "Camera Roll" after photos load to photo stream?

My old process was to synch my Camera Roll from my iPhone to iPhoto and create monthly Events.  iPhoto prompted me to delete the Camera Roll photos from my iPhone, which I would do.  Then I'd synch the newly created Event to my iPhone.

My new process is I have enabled iCloud.  My photos are automatically pushed to a Monthly Photo Stream that I can view on iPhoto on my Mac.  They accumulate during the month in a Photo Stream in events on iPhoto (e.g., "Jan 2013 Photo Stream).  What should I do with the photos in my Camera Roll.  they continue to accumulate.

Questions:

1.  I assume once they are loaded to the monthly Photo Stream, I should delete in my Camera Roll on my iPhone?

2.  Do the Photo Stream photos stay on iPhoto?  So have these photos been saved to iPhoto like I when I synched when I plugged my iphone to my Mac synched directly?

3.  Assuming #1 and #2 are true, what the best way to delete photos in my Camera Roll - selecting all and deleting?

I just want to make sure my photos are being saved safely to my mac.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1, iCloud and Photo Stream
