Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

    @Locky, elly, fambam

As many people have opined here, there seems to be a problem in getting the adaptor to work for long. The only stable solution is to ditch the adaptor(however new and costly it is) and get a direct thuderbolt/mdp to hdmi cable. The solution has been working for me for the last 3 months.

Adaptor - MDP male to HDMI female - Does not work or fails frquently

Cable - MDP male to HDMI male - works well though not approved by HDMI

    Dear Locky,

I had to go through the same heart ache so i understand your sentiments. I had two adaptors fail on me and went through this entire charade of blame apple and having to read through post of dimwits who did not know how to connect cables or click mirror displays.

But then i got the direct cable and it just worked. As someone mentioned in the last page it seems that adaptors somehow tend to burn out, and we have no idea why.

On what else you could try, I have put in an ealier post on step by step instructions if your cable/adaptor fails. maybe you could try those steps before investing in the new cable

    Hi all

Had the problem last year, new moshi fixed the problem. HOWEVER!

Has anyone found that your iPhone causes the signal to die?! Its happened to me a few times now in the last 3 days. My cable to the external monitor runs accross my desk and invariably the phone gets placed on or near the cable. Instant monitor shutdown.

    try it!

I was having the same "no signal" problem with my MacBook Pro running Lion connecting by mini-displayport to HDMI on an Epson EX5200 projector with a cable from Cable Matters.  I switched the resolution for the projector output from 1080p to 1080i and problem solved!

GENIUS!  You nailed it with #2

    1. Intel based macbooks have too GPUs. One a board based Intel GPU for light work and a third party GPU (like NVIDIA) for the most graphic intensive operations. The switching between this is automatic and should happen by itself when you connect an external monitor/tv. However it seems that this fails to happen in some cases. Gfx Card status is third party software than can be installed into macbook and lets you control the switching process. Some users seems to have success in connecting a external monitor when you set the macbook to use only the third party gpu but changing setting in gfx card status to discrete.

How NUTS is it that Apple can't get it together enough to fix their own bugs that some random programmer has to make a manual fix to swap the gpus?

I'm using an actual apple mini-displayport -> hdmi cable too.  It wasn't until I installed Gdx Card Status and flipped the switch a couple times that all the sudden it worked!  Cables were already plugged in, projector was on, just had to clip the GFX switch 3 times and BOOM video!

Geniuses in apple store? gimme a break, the real geniuses are RIGHT HERE online.  Thanks so much for everyones contribution to that answer!

OK guys.... Well.... Samsung "Smart TV" is not as near as smart as it wants it to be.... That I can definitely confirn after  a month of usage...

But, nevertheless, problem I had was solved with AppleTV unit (99,00 USD) and a small software unit called AirParrot (9,99 USD)...

AirPlay works perfectly, and extend display via that small app works very good so far..

So... No cables... of any kind... just switch to the next gen thinking mode...

    Good night...

Okay, so I started to have problems with my Mini Displayport/HDMI adapter today and I found this forum.  I tried everything aarjee suggested on page 41 but to no avail.  I think the only solution now is to buy a Mini Displayport/HDMI cable (even though I'm not entirely sure the source of the problem is caused by the cable).

I was wondering what's the difference between buying a cheap cable and a more expensive one?

Is there really that much of a difference in the build quality?

The NEET mini display to hdmi worked for me. I was having all the problems mentioned on this forum, tried every possible fix. The cable was a gamble but it paid off. Before that, i was having issues connecting with projectors, monitors, you name it. Strange thing is everything was fine with the moshi adapter until around june, then it stopped working properly. Got a NEET adapter and that too didnt work properly. Well as i said a last ditch attempt was the NEET cable and i have had absolutely no problems since i got it in november.

    Good luck.
