If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
- Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
- Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
- Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
- Open iTunes.
- Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

Is there any way to update without purchasing an additional cable?

Yes, you can do it from settings > general > reset > restore.

I had the issue with the 5.2 update for my Apple TV. I had to unplug the APTV, use the micro USB cable to connect it to Itunes on my computer and restore settings. That is great and it brought my ATV back. However I do not have the option to watch TV shows now. That icon has disappeared and I have already paid for full seasons of several shows.
How do I get the TV show's icon to appear? Do I have to downgrade back down to the 5.1 version? If so, how do I do that?
Thank you for your help!

Hmm, I wish I could help you with that. Mine hasn't given me any problems since I did the restore through iTunes.
