How do I add a new contact onto icloud? If not on the icloud I can't send or receive texts since they aren't on my icloud. Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

    1. First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
    2. Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
    3. If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

You don't have to add a contact to iCloud in order to send and receive messages from the contact.  But to get your contacts in iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID to create and account, turn Contacts to On, and when prompted choose Merge to upload your contacts to iCloud.

thank you Randers. I fixed it. It was a setting in iTunes. People did not receive my texts unless they were on my iCloud contact list for some reason. It's fixed but now I have double contacts for most of them. At least my contacts are receiving my texts now. Thank you for responding.

You're welcome.  If you don't want to delete the duplicates manually on your phone, there are apps like My Contacts Backup Pro that will locate and remove exact duplicates.

oh thank you Randers. But what is some are linked to iCloud and the dups aren't?

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question.

the dups aren't exact becaues they aren't linked to iCloud. I want to delete the duplicate ones that aren't and keep the iCloud linked ones.

You have a couple of options.  One option is to just hide them from view by opening Contacts, tapping Groups, then tapping the none-iCloud group(s) so they aren't checked, then tap Done.

The other option is to delete the non-iCloud contacts.  You can do this by doing the following:

    1. First go to icloud.com on your computer and open your contacts to confirm that they are there.
    2. Assuming they are, download the My Contacts Backup from the app store to your phone.  If you have fewer than 500 contacts you can use the free one.
    3. Use the app to back up your contacts as they are now.  It will back them up as an attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  If necessary, you can later open the email and tap the attachment to re-import them back to your phone.
    4. After confirming that you have the backup email you made in step 2, go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts to Off, when prompted choose Delete from My iPhone.  This deletes the iCloud contacts from your phone, but not from iCloud.
    5. Use the My Contacts Backup app to delete the remaining contacts from your phone.  To do this, open the app, tap the gear-shaped icon on the bottom right, then scroll to the bottom and tap Remove All Contacts.
    6. Confirm that there are no remaining contacts on your phone.
    7. Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts to On to sync the iCloud contacts back to your phone.  You should now only have the iCloud contacts on your phone.
