The music that I have on my iPhone is taken from 5 playlists on iTunes, one of which has all of the music that I listen to on it. I have 4 songs that I don't like any more that I have been trying to delete, but every time I sync, they redownload. I have checked and none of them are in any of the 5 playlists. even when I manually delete them from the music app, they try to download again when I sync. In iTunes, my iPhone is set to sync only those playlists and nothing else. My phone is running the most recent update of iOS 6.

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1

Connect your phone to iTunes, go to the Summary tab, check "Sync only checked songs and videos", then go to your music library and check only the songs you want on your phone (uncheck the 4 you don't want), then check Sync Music on the Music tab and click Apply to sync.

Yes.  If it's checked iTunes will sync to your phone.  Unchecking a song followed by syncing removes it.  If your entire library is checked and you only want certain playlists on your phone, click on any single song, go to Edit>Select All, right-click on the selected songs and choose Uncheck Selection.*  Then click on the playlists you want and check just the songs in the playlists.

*You can also select a range of songs by clicking the first one, the shift-clicking the last one.  Then right-click and choose Uncheck Selection.
