My me.com email has all of a sudden stopped working two days ago and is asking me for the password which I am sure I know and i enter this with no success. The password is strangely not in keychain! Any ideas why and how to fix?

Hi Dave, strange about the Keychain thing!?

Could be many things, we should start with this...

    "Try Disk Utility

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

    3. Click the First Aid tab.

    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

    Is the incoming server imap.mail.me.com or mail.me.com & Outgoing smtp.mail.me.com or smtp.me.com

    Hi

The icoming server is mail.me.com, I have found the password on keychain, still no good, the password I tried is the same as in keychain.

I think this problem may have came about because I plugged my ipad into the mac to get music and re charge, normally I recharge using separetly using mains plug, although i have plugged into mac before, still shouldnt mess up mail though?

I'm not sure whhere the disk is, and I havent completed a safe boot to date, not sure how to do this so will have a look at trying this.

    Thanks for replying

The problem is also on my laptop, ipad, and phone, no me.com email. Is this still a reboot job? I have the instalation disk now.

    Thanks

    The icoming server is mail.me.com

That is the old no longer existing server.

    On the Mac anyway...

sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.

I understand .mac/.me mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.

You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.

iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...

On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.

    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com

        •    SSL Required: Yes

        •    Port: 993

        •    Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

        •    Password: Your iCloud password

    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com

        •    SSL Required: Yes

        •    Port: 587

        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes

        •    Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

        •    Password: Your iCloud password

        •

Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

    Thanks to dpepper...
