Q: iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

you have to do this with the Sprint sim?, and after you finish updating then you put your local carrier sim?

or i can do the whole process with my carrier sim? thanks.

Yes, finally you can send SMS without any work-around.

Update your iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1 which was released today officially and enjoy sending SMS, activate iMessage & FaceTime. There is no need to use Sprint SIM card to update. I had an OTA update with my Vodafone Egypt SIM in my iPhone 5 and it worked properly.

P.S this proves that Apple listen to what we face and work on it without any propaganda.

    Guys, Congratulations :)

    Thanks GOD

Go directly from Ios 6.0.2 to 6.1...I did it and it work, so no need for beta 5. Good luck chuck,;-)

I updated to iOS 6.1 today and now I can't send SMS whereas it was working before. Suggestions? I've read through a million threads and it's kind of frustrating to see what seems to have fixed the problem for everyone else caused the problem for me. Using Sprint, and it won't send SMS, only messages to iPhone users. I've gone through the usual steps for this but nothing seems to be working. I don't suppose there's a way to re-download iOS 6.1 to see if it decides to work on a second go-around?

@Heartehx, Same thing here!  Sprint iPhone 5 previously on 6.02 everything was working fine for months since purchase.  I am not jailbroken, etc.  Upgrade to 6.1 and I can no longer send or receive text to anyone w/o iphone.  iMessage and Facetime Constantly show "Waiting for Activation".  After a lot of searching, I have tried everything!  rebooting, turning iMessage off, on a bazillion times, adding a new contact address, removing all contact addresses and adding new, switching contact addresses, etc etc.  Same fail.  If iMessage is failing to activate, then how can I send messages to iphone users?  Maybe the SMS aspect is failing to register on Sprint's network?  There is no way this is isolated to me (or a couple of users).

I should also mention that I have a new iPAD and => 6.1 w/o issue.  Logs onto iMessage and Facetime w/o issue.  I also changed it so that the ipad and iphone are using different contact email addresses.  I do receive popup messages on both devices when I change the contact letting me know that the contact address has changed on "the other device".  I even tried loggin out on iPAD then in on iPhone thinking maybe the same acount login was wreakign havoc.  NOPE.

Bought my sons phone same time I did, we both did the upgrade yesterday, and only I seem to have the problem.  One difference is that I have iPAD too.

This seems like a sprint SMS network connection problem, but that do I know...  I am frustrated after trying everything I could think of to resolve.
