On iTunes, under preferences, I go to the sharing tab and click share my library on my local network.
We don't actually have to do that for Home Sharing ... that's for the older "Music Sharing" system. For some discussion of the distinction between the two, see the following document:
Is there another computer on your network that you want to home share with? If so, is iTunes currently running on that computer?

I'm having the exact same problem and would like to get a decent answer
the person above me completely missed the actual problem and went on a different tangent.

Time for me to chime in; I have this problem, too.
My iTunes library is on my iMac; my Windows XP NetBook is unable to see any shared libraries. On the other hand, when I launch the Music app on my iPad, I can see the shared libraries and play them! That confirms that the iMac is hosting successfully, yet I'd really prefer to use the NetBook as my 'media access point' at my entertainment system downstairs. I've read all the posts to date, and nothing seems to help. Help!

Same problem. I am trying to share a Windows XP and a Mac, both have current itunes software. Everytime I turn on the homeshare network, I get a grayed out homeshare button and when click on it, it says I can share. When I click "done", the homeshare network button on sidebar vanishes. I have spent hours researching the problem. Verrrrry frustrated.

OK, I was furious about this as well. Here's what fixed it for me. In iTunes, click the "Advanced" menu, then click "Turn on Home Sharing." It should ask for a password. For some reason even after setting everything up, this was still not enabled. Hope this helps!
