The mail app is configured for me, so he tries to check via a web browser (Safari or Chrome). I'm the primary user, but occasionally he does want to use it. Is this apple's way of trying to force us to buy two iPads (not gonna happen and not a good marketing strategy if so), or is there something we can do?

What leads you to believe Apple is trying to force you to buy two ipads?  Maybe the website does not allow access from a mobile device like an iPad?  Maybe he's inputting the wrong credential information.

GMail is accessible on iPads. There is nothing stopping Gmail from working "by apple's design".

When you say it doesn't work - what EXACTLY do you mean? What EXACTLY happens, and when?

Just saying it's "not working" really doesn't give us anything to go on...

Can he not access http://www.gmail.com/ ? Does the website not appear?

Can he not enter his username and password in the boxes provided?

If so, does it not accept his password?

Do you get any error messages? If so, what do they say?

Have you tried the official GMail app from the AppStore?

I just tried accessing my Gmail account through Safari on my iPad and it worked fine.

Have you checked that Javascript is ON in Settings > Safari?

Have you tried clearing the Safari Cookies and Data in Settings > Safari?

Have you tried deleting Website Data for Google domains in Settings > Safari > Advanced?

Yes, you mentioned you were the primary user in your original message, but you stated you were using the Mail app - not Google's GMail app.

You can easily setup Google's Gmail app with separate Gmail account logins to the Apple Mail app - even multiple ones and easily switch between them. Just tap the button that has 3 lines on it in the very top left of the screen.
