You can reinstall ML 'in place' (that is the default) nothing else should be affected .. but this is the real world so I advise backing up first.

If this does not cure the problem then I suspect that the issue lies outside your machine.

Do this (it's a test) make a rule in Mail to copy all incoming Mail to a local inbox as it arrives, then see if the email vanishes from it as well as the server folder.

Also are you losing email from all accounts or only some?

Thought you might like to know that I did re-install the Mountain Lion and every thing appeared to go in OK. I could see no way of saving the installer, so just let it go along its' merry route!

You should have saved a copy before you clicked the install button, you can download it again if needed.

But let's hope that this and Plusnets ssistance have fixed it.

I remembered a comment you made earlier in this discussion about saving, but when I went to download from "My Purchases" at the App Store, there was no facility for saving. It seems that I have to download it each and every time, which is a real pain in the butt!

It still apears to be fine and operating as it should.

    Cheers

You're missing something here. Download ML from the App Store and upon completion of the download you will arrive at a screen containing the button to start the install, if you do not press that button at that point you can make a copy of the installer (which will be in the Applications folder)

If however you just press the button (after all it is there) your opportunity to make a copy is lost and another download will be required to get another installer. Yes, it's not really explained well anywhere, except (maybe) here

Actually no, if you are reinstalling from Recovery you are using the copy that was created when ML was installed and is therefore already saved (you can use it from Recovery whenever you like). For a separate copy of the installer (ie. to install on another machine) or to reinstall without going through recovery use the method I described before.

It did actually download the OSX. It took something like 120 minutes to down load and install. I had to make sure I was connected via Wi-Fi to enable everything to go forward. The messages on the screen, whist this was taking place was something like "Downloading x hours/minutes to completion." When all that had finished, it then said "Installation taking place" or something akin to that. The other way I know it was downloading was that I have nearly reached my 10gb usage amount this month on the Internet and the last time that happened was when I had to download it twice back in May/June last year! But not to worry, it went in and that was the main thing.

Yes, recovery does download an up to date copy of the OS usually, another good reason to make a 'stand-alone' version. (Which will need to be updated to the current version after installation) it's the same as far as time is concerned (roughly)
