I suggest taking it into the apple store, as they are incredibly good with things like that. It may turn out that you simply got something sticky behind the button, and unscrewing it, and giving it a wipe will do the trick. Usually they know what to do, and will give you more info. Apple resellers are also fine, but I prefer apple stores personally.

- If you have iOS 5 and later you can turn on Assistive Touch it add the Home and other buttons to the iPods screen. Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch
