I can't unmute my Notebook!

Having a mare.. There is no sound on my notebook. If I try and unmute (pressing the 'volume up' button), an the speaker icon comes up in grey with the 'no entry' symbol

 

 

HELP PLEASEEE!

    Is your MacBook plugged into an external audio device?

     

    If not, will most likely be a software issue. The quickest way to fix an software issue to copy a simple command into the Terminal and it will restart the "CoreAudio" portion of the operating system:

     

    To launch Terminal:

     

    > Click on the Finder icon on your Dock.

    > Click on Applications on the Sidebar.

    > Double click on the Utilities folder.

    > Double click on the Terminal icon.

     

    When Terminal launches, you will be presented with a white window.

     

    You need to copy and paste this command:

     

    sudo kill -9 `ps ax|grep 'coreaudio[a-z]' |awk '{print $1}'`

     

    You will be prompted to enter your password (no characters will appear when you're typing, this is normal behavior). Press enter when you have entered your password, and if it's correct, it will execute the command.

     

    Give the computer 30 seconds or so to restart the service (it won't look like it's doing anything, this is again normal). You'll know when it's complete if you can type into the Terminal again.

     

    Safely exit Terminal by going to Terminal in the Menu and clicking Quit Terminal.

     

    Then try unmutting your MacBook. If it works, awesome! If it doesn't, it might be a hardware or deeper software issue. You'll be best contacting Apple in that case. Contact Apple: Contact Us
