The reason is because the screen is probably in 16:9. When it rotates to portrait, the video signal is still in landscape mode, thus you have a 16:9 image on a 9:16 canvas. Try using SwitchResX instead and see if it is smart enough to swap the aspect ratio.

Thanks a million computer fixer!
I've just downloaded the trial of switchresx, but I can't figure out how to make it display in portrait mode.
Any tips? I'm googling around to find a tutorial, but I haven't found anything yet.
If there is something quick you can recommend which won't take up much of your time, I'd love to hear it.
If I really get stuck, I'll send another post with some type of "drowning! can't figure it out!" type-phrases. (:

Sorry, I know everybody hates a "bump", but thought maybe I should ask again. I have not been able to find a solution to my problem and emailed the developer of switchresx.

I was having the same problem. Got it fixed.
Note: I do have switchresx installed. But I'm not completely sure it solved the problem, because when I plugged in the monitor originally, and selected the 90 degree rotation, it DID NOT work originally (when switchresx was already installed.)
1. I plugged in the monitor fresh, and the monitor worked fine, but in landscape mode (by default)
2. I went to the monitor's menu (using buttons on front of monitor) and changed the aspect ratio to 4:3
3. Then I went to the CPUs display settings and rotated. It worked! (but now the full monitor isn't used do to contstrained ratio.)
4. Now, with the monitor flipped, but still in the constrained ratio, I went back to the monitors menu (like in #2 above) and switched the ratio back to 16:10. And it worked!
Hopefully works for you.
Also, I really hope the settings work on restart...I haven't power cycled since I got the new screen setup, and suddenly I have a sense of dread!
