When photos are stored into the Photostream and then accessed by other devices, do these photos consume memory on each device, or is the device looking to the cloud?

I have lots of photos stored in iPhoto - Photostream but these photos appear to be consuming memory on both iPad and iPhone.  Is this corrent

The Photo Stream photos are buffered in the cloud for syncing to the devices, but each device keepsma local copy of the Photo Stream. Otherwise you would not be able to see the photos, when you are offline.

Because each device stores its own copy of the stream, the photo stream may show different sets of photos on each device.
