Q: iTunes Match vs. Play Counts

Hello everyone - I need some help.

I signed up for Match last night, and it matched/uploaded just about all of my music. I've been messing with it today trying to figure out how it works, and ran into an error that I can't figure out - play counts.

I downloaded a new album (CAMP by Childish Gambino, if you're wondering), imported it into iTunes, uploaded it to iCloud/Match, and it was listed as "Matched." The album showed up on my iPhone and my iPad. Perfect!

I listened to it a few times on my phone, rated a few songs, etc, then opened up iTunes to see what it did. It pulled down the ratings from the cloud, but not the play counts. I plugged my phone in and synced (wifi sync wasn't connecting due to an unknown error) in hopes that an itunes sync would pull the play counts down, but no luck...

Anyone else tried this or have a similar experience? I have a few playlists built around play counts and would really like to have my play counts updated. Thanks!

    Good morning,

After turning iTunes Match off on my laptop, and then turning it back on, it has begun to update every 24 hours, with the initiating event seeming to be completing play of any song (device doesn't seem to matter, but I played on my iphone) after the end of the latest 24 hour period.  Thus starts a new 24 hour period.

Very unusual that it doesn't update every 24 hours, ONLY after you complete playing a song after the 24 hour start period.

The last played date does seem to work in this way, and has now for several days of testing.

What does not work, and I would like to know if others are having the same issue and know how to resolve, is that while the last played date and time updates correctly, the Playcount is increased by 2 for each song that was played in the last day.  Go figure.

The other thing that is disappointing to me is that we are trying to figure out what works, when Apple should just put out documentation as to how it works.  Then I would know if my system is operating out of line with the way it is intended to operate, instead of us trying one thing at a time, daily, and trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

So far, I haven't seen enough improvement to get me to renew my iTunes Match subscription, which renews in a couple of weeks.

I have seen that updates to my Recently Played and Unplayed playlist are reflected on iTunes each day that I care to check. Great but hey I'm wondering to what values would playcounts and last played date set to if Match subscription ends? Would we lose all these data we lovingly gained while on Match?

I've also seen play counts increasing by 2 when I've only played them once,  the only way I've noticed it is on new songs I've just added, I've made a mental note on some of my other music I play a lot to see how often it's happening!

The only thing I can help with on this is when I've turned match off the data doesn't disappear and reset to a "pre match" level, by the looks of it all the data is added to the iTunes library file when it updates the play counts, this is also the case when you move your library from one computer to another.

    Quite risky I know.

All I know is that no matter how many times I turn match off and on, I still do NOT get my play counts updating even after 24 hours.

No.  I'll try that too.  Does that force an update through Match?  I wonder if it's because I have it turned on for four devices (iPad, iPhone, and two laptops).

I've got the same number of devices so I don't think it's that, I turned my phone on&off, then match on&off, then played a song on my laptop, it eventually started working, it's very complicated, think its just a case of keep trying, good luck!

LOL.  Sounds like I need a shaman, a full moon, and some old runes.

Mine is also now updating, it seems, on the 24 hour period, initiated by more playing of songs on the iOS device.

I am also noticing that play counts increase by two instead of one in my master iTunes library on my iMac.

What I can't understand is that other cloud based services from Apple like Photostream photos and Calendar events sync perfectly and quite quickly.  Why is there so much trouble with a small amount of metadata like a play count or last date played being synced via the cloud?

    Craig.

Mine is still NOT updating play counts no matter how many times I play a song from my iPhone over multiple days.

Would anyone from Apple care to look into this?  It's a possible blocker issue for repeat buisness.

I can't believe it.  My play counts just updated for the first time.  I too am seeing it increase by two for each single play.  Better than zero.  lol

Why is something so simple, so hard for Apple.  Playcount.   But, now that they have figured out how to increase playcount by 2, hopefully they can figure out quick.  My renewal is in 3 weeks.

I guess they don't think it's that important unfortunately, I'm getting some update by 1 and some by 2, ahhhh

any idea what is happening with the ones that are updating correctly?   I can't tell where any are updating by 1, rather all playcounts are increasing by 2 in each instance that a song is played  (about 25 songs).
