My daughter's macbook pro 15" hi res laptop purchashed summer of 2012 made it through one year of University then, in Oct/Nov. the outer cord casing on the magsafe adapter cracked and the the green light flickered on/off intermittently unless the cord was posiitoned 'just so'.  My daughter limpled along like this until Christmars break (as the only Apple supplier in Prince George BC is Future Shop and they were sold out of these 85W  $110 chargers).  We replace it at Christmas - when I went to the Apple Store in Waterloo, ON. the guy in the store told me - "Ya - we're going through a lot of those".  I said the computer is barely over a year old - he said "I know".  I ask the question - is anyone else out there having these issues.  I might add my daughter is in engineering and that computer is her baby - she takes really good care of it.

It gets better.  After she returned to Prince George (she loaded Mountain Lion at Christmas - I mention in passing - not a factor here I don't believe) the computer starting acting up one day - the battery indicated a full charge but when unplugged lasted only a few minutes.  To make a long story short, the computer eventually failed - with battery or plugged in.  She took it into Future Shop and they shipped it to Apple.  We were pre-charged $900 Cdn assuming is could be one of the boards and /or hard drive - now we've found out it's another $200 to fix - looking at $1100 here and 4 weeks without a computer.  I had the contents of her computer transferred over to a new one (bought a new MacBook Pro for her so she didn't miss a beat).  Meanwhile we're waiting for the 'old' MacBook Pro to come back from Apple (mom and dad will inherit it I guess).  Very frustrating - costly - not the quality I expect from an apple product.  I'm wondering if others out there have any similar issues - it just seems weird for a 16 month old computer that is treated with kid gloves.  I'm suspicious this all comes down to the charger but I have no way of knowing.  I've noticed a few similar stories on this forum but not enough to declare a trend.
