I got an iPad in 2011 and established an iCloud address.  In 2013 I purchased a new iPhone 5 and it somehow has assumed my iCloud address that I use on my iPad.  I need them to be different.  I don't want my emails mixed and would like to be able to communicate without reinventing the wheel between the devices.  Any guidance?

The iCloud email account is tied to the iCloud account.  If you want a different (new) email account you'll have to create a new iCloud account for your phone.  You can, however, create an email alias to use associated with your current account (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2622).  It will have a different email address, but will receive email to the same inbox as the current address so this may not meet your needs.
