Q: I'm having considerable difficulty using scan to file from an HP8600;  (I can do it using the IP address of my computer, but not using its network name.)  Has this issue been addressed?

I'm using an HP8600 OfficeJet.

 

I see that technical briefs suggest that there has been a change in how OSX handles file sharing and SMB in particular (Mountain Lion; OSX 10.6 and later, I'm on OSX 10.8.2.)

    Hi,

    When using Mac OS X SMB (Windwos based) sharing you must use the Mac's IP and not its hostname, using the hostname is only supported between Mac OS X device, connecting to an SMB shared folder can only be done by the IP address as you may find listed once going to System Preferences > Sharing, ensure that SMB sharing is enabled within the Options section

    Thank you for the reply.

     

    I have to say that it doesn't make sense to me that SMB would be implemented in a way requiring the IP address, since this requires an extra step that not everyone will know how to do and must be done everytime the DHCP assigns a new address.  That would be a truly bizarre implementation, and very un-Apple like.

     

    I also believe that the hostame is known to all devices on the network, not just Apple devices.

     

    After working with an Apple tech support person yesterday, it appears that there may be a bug in the HP embedded web server that is used to set up the folder locations.  The utility seems to have a format checker that is excluding the required incancation, while not working with the specifications that it accepts.  From a few different sources I'm told that

     

    smb://hostname/pathname

     

    should work, but it isn't accepted by the embedded webserver.  I'm told that this notation should work going either way (mac looking at pc, or pc looking at mac.)   Can anyone confirm or deny this?

    I'm having the same problem, but what is odd is that I bought a new iMac 27", and now it cannot scan to the new computer.  My old iMac had Mountain Lion and the printer scanned to it fine.  My MBP also has Mountain Lion, and the printer still sees it and scans to it.  I just cannot figure out how to get it to scan to the new iMac.  I have all the latest software from HP and latest firmware.  I'm sharing the printer and scanner on the network.  Even if I connect the USB cord from the printer directly into the new iMac, it still says it cannot communicate with the printer when I try to "Enable scan to computer" in the HP utility.  I'm baffled.
