You cannot remove the password from a backup. If you could there would be no point in having a password. If you can't remember the password you will have to restore your phone as a new phone.

If you format your PC you will lose all content on it, including the backup. And your iTunes content - music, videos, apps. And any documents you have that you need (If you don't have any content on your computer that you need why do you have a computer at all?)

Sounds rather drastic, but it's your choice.

You can delete the backup from the file system (not with iTunes), and, if you do not have a corporate email account create a new one without a password. If you do have a corporate account the password is forced on you by your Exchange administrator.

i do have two different apple account, how do i delete backup from the file system and does that clear the password?Sorry but don't understand what you mean, thanks.does this password have anything to do with the passwords i use on the ipad?

I don't know if deleting the backup clears the password, but if you can't guess what the password is (it is a password that you have used in the past) deleting the backup may clear it. If it doesn't there's a setting in the iTunes database that needs to be cleared also; that's harder to do, and you would lose your playlists. And the last possibility is the corporate email account requiring it. But, if you can't use the backup there's no harm in deleting it as its useless.

To delete it go to the right location and delete the backup folder:

iTunes places the backup files in the following places:

    • Mac~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    • Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

Hi, I found a solution that worked for me and hopefully will work for some others.

I also did a recent backup that I think was encrypted but I did not enter any password.  So when I went to restore from backup it asked for a password.  Same as others here I tried every password I could think of without any luck.  Cut to the chase, this is what worked for me if you are on a mac.

Go to the "keychain access " app.

    Under "Keychains" select "Login"

    Under "Category" select "Passwords"

Scroll down and look for "iPhone Backup"

Double click and a window opens

Check the box that says "Show Password"

A window pops up asking for your laptop (OS X) password

Type in that password and voila! ......a password should appear in the keychain access window next to the box you checked "show password"

In my case the password that showed up (iphonelogin) is nothing I have ever set for anything so I wonder if somehow that was put in as a default when I backed up through iTunes?  Who knows but it worked.
