Hello, not enough of the log for me to tell anything.

What was running when it happened?

I was running BOINC, Safari, and Vuze at the time.  Maybe iTunes too but thats really all I have on the computer right now.  I sprayed the inside with canned air and now one stick of RAM is not reconized.  Here is the full report.

    Thanks!

(Safari quit while I typed this the first time so I took the opportunity to swap the Sonnet 1.4 for the origional 733.)

Did we get the RAM problem fixed yet?

Has it crashed with the 733 yet?

I reseated the RAM and am in the process of testing it with Remember right now.  OS shows 1.5GB but it is only testing 1103MB, is that normal?

So far so good on the 733, it is even recognizing my  bluetooth keyboard which it wasn't earlier.

I really hope it wasn't the processor but if it was which Apple processor cards will work in a Quicksilver 2001?

  • 5. Re: Can someone translate this?, Can someone translate this?

Yes, it's normal to rest less.

Let's see if we can get better help on which CPUs work.

I researched a little into kernel panics and something I noticed is that mine all backtrace to the same memory addresses.  Any way of finding out exactly what they are?

  • 7. Re: Can someone translate this?, Can someone translate this?
    BDAqua Level 10 Level 10 (116,480 points)

My guess is a Hardware problem.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

    Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /private/var/run/StartupItems

    /Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

  • 8. Re: Can someone translate this?, Can someone translate this?
    BananaHands Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I repaired disk permissions and verified the disk on the 3rd and thought it fixed the problem.  I didn't do it in Safe Boot if that makes a difference.  I'm doing it in Safe Boot right now and both come up ok.

Remember said the RAM is fine and everything else is working perfectly so I'm going to say it was the processor.  Maybe my installation was wrong.  I thought it said I didn't need to update my firmware so of just put it in and installed the firmware once the problems started.  I also forgot to reset the PRAM. Would it hurt anything to try the computer with the processor now that the software/firmware would have been installed beforehand?

I appreciate your help, is there any way I can remove my reply as the one that answered my question so I can give credit to you?  I have no idea how it got there.

    Mike

Mike, you can't change a Help or Solved once marked.

I don't think it would hurt to try the CPU now... as long as you have all your data backed up.

I popped the Sonnet card back in and zeroed out the hard drive.  The computer kernel panicked while installing OX X 10.4 so I'm guessing that it isn't the RAM or the hard drive.  That pretty much leaves the CPU and the power supply.  What would make the CPU fail like that?  Anything testable or repairable?

  • 11. Re: Can someone translate this?, Can someone translate this?
    BDAqua Level 10 Level 10 (116,480 points)

Many possibilities, but wilst the RAM may work with a 733, it may not work with faster CPUs.

THermal pAste may be an issue, or look into disabling the L2/L3 Cache on the faster CPU.

I'll do a memtest with the sonnet card before I pull it again.  How do I disable the cache?  I've looked for that online but couldn't find anything.

Hmm, do you have  Developer Tools & CHUD installed?

I just did a basic install because the system only seems to be stable for an hour or so.  If they are on the Tiger install CDs I can get to them after I run the memory check.
