I currently have version 10.5.8 on my macbook pro, I updated my iphone software and my computer will no longer connect to my iPhone. When i go under software updates it says my software is up to date. Help!

You need to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard or above. OS X Snow Leopard can be purchased from the Apple Store for £14.99. Then, I would advise purchasing OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store on Snow Leopard, which is also £14.99. This will bring you bang up to date.
