Now getting message that says: "the library in X cannot be loaded because it is from a newer version of Aperture.
Have you used software update after reinstalling? If you installed from your DVD you will have installed an earlier version of aperture, that is not the version you used with your current Aperture library. Run software update from the Apple menu, before you try to open your Aperture library.

Yes, I did software update. But now, instead of getting of the "library is newer version of aperture message" I now get the original error message saying there is general problem with the library.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times now.
Anything else I can try?

The message you are getting is telling you you have a problem with the Aperture library not Aperture the program. You ] didn;t need to reinstall the application.
You need to do the library first aid. specifically do a library repair. Hold down the option and command keys while you start Aperture you will get the first aid window. Select repair library and see if that clears up the problem.

And what is the exact error message? Sometimes this means, that Aperture cannot find the Aperture library. Select your library in the Finder; then hold down the option and command keys while you start Aperture you will get the first aid window, as Frank Caggiano said.

Thank you for your suggsetions, I did try all three options in the first aid-- and still, I get the original message which reads:
There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/X/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
Does this mean aperture cannot find the Aperture library or? Any other suggestions?

I would first make a backup copy of your library. Then there are a number of things you could try:
1. Start Aperture 3.4 holding down the option key and create a new test library. There will be nothing in it. Then try to import your photos from the questionnable library. This might work. If it does, then continue using the test library. You can eventually rename it.
2. Do you have an up to date copy of iPhoto around? If so, try opening the questionnable library with it. The program libraries are now cross compatible. If iphoto opens it you may be able to save or export it as an iphoto library and then import the pictures back into Aperture. My aperture sometimes hangs on opening the library, but iPhoto will open it.
3. Trash Aperture and all associated plists. Reinstall 3.0 then update to 3.4 and try again.
4. Repair your disk and permissions, try again.
5. Reinstall Mountain Lion over itself and do software updates. Try again.
6. If none of this works and you've already repaired your library it may be damaged. You may be able to recover your photos by "showing package contents" in finder and drilling down until you find them, but this is normally not recommended.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. IT worked! Well, temporarily anyway. I did rebuild database, and Aperture opened, all files there. Great, right? Except next time we tried to important photos/video from a Sony RX100, it froze again, mid import. And now, once again getting "error opening library message"
Tried openeing with iPhoto, and it said "library is in use by another user."
Any thoughts on what could be happening here?
The only thing that was different about the import that originally locked us out of aperture was video clips were imported as well (from the Sony RX100) - could this have possibly caused damage to the library?
Any advice greatly appreciated!
