Can't delete folders on desktop.

Please see attached picture below. There are 4 folders in the middle of the picture which I cannot delete. I have tried the following...

 

1. Dragging them to the trash.

 

2. Command i, to see if I can change the permissions. Cmd i does nothing, as in nothing opens

 

3. Tried to delete them via terminal using sudo rm -R

 

Any ideas?

    Most likely ghosts. Reboot and see if they go away. If not, click on the house icon, select Desktop, select list view, and see if they're listed.

    Thanks for the feedback. Sorry the HD died. Hopefully, you have a viable backup.
