    Thanks for your reply. Why what is supposed to happen when iOS 7 comes out and why then would it need iTunes 11? If that I'll stay away from iOS 7  :^0

    Nobody but Apples developers know the roadmap and system requirements. There is no guarantee that a new iOS release will require a newer version of iTunes. Basically, whether iOS requires a particular version of iTunes depends on what functionality is required within iTunes itself to support certain features. Currently, iOS 6.x requires iTunes 10.7 or higher. For any iOS upgrade, users should check the system requirements prior to an upgrade.

    Here's what I don't get, Apple: Cover Flow is still a view option in the Mountain Lion Finder. What's up with that? As a Finder view, Cover Flow has limited usefulness, but it's OK. My Applications folder looks nice when viewed in Cover Flow, but it doesn't add all that much because at least there are icon graphics even in the plain List view.

    But Apple, in iTunes 11 the Songs view (the List view equivalent) has no graphics at all because you took out the option to show the album covers in a little box; then you removed Cover Flow on top of that, so THE MOST USEFUL VIEW in iTunes 11 has no ability to display album art! What do you have against graphics? Graphical interfaces are what Apple is all about.

    Apple, if you like inconsistent interfaces these days, then go ahead and remove the Cover Flow view in your Operating System, but please put it back in iTunes.

    Trane and Abombaci,

    I called Apple Support yesterday before upgrading my 4S to 6.1, and they actually told me that IOS 6.1 is not compatible with iTunes 10.7.  Maybe they meant not optimally compatible, but when they said that I didn't press any further. Trane I'm glad your real-world experience is showing that it works, please let us know how it goes for you over the next few weeks and if you find any weird behavior.  If all goes well for you then I will also upgrade to 6.1 on my 4S.  I've actually been thinking of getting the iPhone 5, but now my plans for that are on hold until they restore the 10.7 functionality to iTunes - at the very least they need to bring Cover Flow back because that's what really made iTunes elegant and "Apple-like" for so many.

    It probably wouldn't hurt for people planning to try and use IOS 6.1 with iTunes 10.7 to give Apple support a call to get the story straight from them.  This will also raise awareness that keeping iTunes 10.7 functionality is a big deal to a lot of people for all the reasons stated here, and that can't help but get back to the iTunes development team.  If it becomes known that people are actually postponing IOS updates and IOS device purchases in order to keep iTunes 10.7 functionality, that might provide the ultimate motivation for the iTunes development team to make things right.  The guys at Apple support are super nice, give them a call - 1-800-275-2273.

    Yeah, the disparity in UI experience is disconcerting. This really feels like a case of one hand not having a clue as to what the other is doing. In this case, we obviously have an application team that is seemingly unaware of the fact that CF is a feature of just about every aspect of the OS X/iOS user experience. *sigh*

    In other news, Patrick Weisser wrote a nice message that seems to have been nuked by moderators. Dang.

    Anyway, Patrick, let me reply to an important point. You wrote: "I called Apple Support yesterday before upgrading my 4S to 6.1, and they actually told me that IOS 6.1 is not compatible with iTunes 10.7."

    That seems pretty silly on their part. Right on the iPhone 5 Technical Specifications page it says:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
    • Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
    • PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    • iTunes 10.7 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Apple does a pretty decent job of keeping their tech specs up-to-date with the various application and OS releases, so I don't think it's an anomaly that my real-world experience with iOS 6.1 with iTunes 10.7 has been trouble-free.

    DRH255, borgboy admits "I do now know what cover flow is and I won't miss it much, never used it much."

    No one is trying to scare him off. The commenter who asked him to post his comments in a more relevant forum was fine. He is welcome there.

    Geez, the fact that I am still even reading/commenting here means I really miss cover flow... either that or I have way too much time on my hands

    Huge disappointment that cover flow is removed.  Was my #1 loved feature.  Apple now run by complete idiots.

    Appalled at the loss of Coverflow - is it me, or does every new "upgrade" result in the loss of something useful and well loved? Huge mistake in my opinion - it has shaken a 20 year confidence in Apple.

    I have an older version on my external drive which hasn't been changed as I don't have it plugged in now. Is there a way to plug it in, open iTunes so that 11 will not override it? I loved cover flow and won't update without checking every feature lost in future updates. OR how do you downgrade immediatly?

    Here's another (Windows) user who upgraded to 11, discovered the lack of Cover Flow and immediately reverted to 10.7.  I play iTunes through an HTPC into my wide screen TV and A/V system, so I very much want to have an attractive screen for me and my guests to look at, and in fact CF is pretty much a minimum.  I would love (e.g. I would pay for, at this point) a more attractive/informative plugin, that would display info such as the progress indicator, star rating etc. along with the album art.  But companies seem to have stopped writing plugins for iTunes years ago, especially for Windows.  I don't know what Apple thinks people do with iTunes, but I can't believe I'm the only one who actually uses it as a player and wants some decent visuals (and not the lame psychedelic nebula explosions in the "visualizer").

    You bring up some excellent points, PD. I would love to see Cover Flow brought back (obviously) and also include:

    The option to display progress of the entire playlist (as it did in 10.7, but pretty much useless to me) or just the song playing.

    More options for text size/behavior. 10.7 had two options for CF text; large and small. But even the small doesn't work on some displays (e.g. wall projectors) or for longer song or album names. In this day and age of sometimes infinite-seeming remixes, the entire song title often doesn't fit. Ditto for album titles. The ability to turn album titles off entirely would be nice, too. All I really want to see is the song title and artist. You mention the ability to see the star rating. Would be great, and so would the ability to show other fields that might be important to that user. For me, it would be the genre, but I'm sure that differs from person to person.

    An option to hide progress bar/controls entirely. I use CF in a dance studio and all the dancers really need to see is the song title and the album cover. They don't need to see the controls. Can't this be like iTunes videos, the controls appear when you mouse over them, but disappear when you don't need them?

    Hoping someone not only brings CF (or something like it) back, but improves it. Just like you, I'd be willing to pay for it at this point.

    Don't want the visualizer. Can't use the cloud since I'm often at studios later at night when management is long gone and there is no hope of getting a wireless password. I want iTunes as a stand-alone application. One that includes Cover Flow.

    Agree 100% affenspinscher.  Seems like a customizable display is such a simple thing.  My gripe with CF is that it displays the "album artist" rather than "artist" tag, so when you organize your compilations by using Various Artists as the album artist (I recall there's some good reason to do that), that's what it says in CF.  But that is easily solved, I just haven't taken the time to convert them to Compilations or remind myself of why I did it that way.  Anyway, a better product would be very welcome.

    Also funny about what you say about the controls.  You can use the "big album art" window as an alternative Cover Flow, but it makes me crazy that the artist/album info disappears unless you mouse over it.  Geez.

    I installed Cover Stream and it works great...

    At least when i use it in a "passive" way (iTunes plays something / Cover Stream follows)...
    but if I try to use it in an "activ" way (Cover Stream gives Order / iTunes follows), I can't give more than several Songs to be played... After that Cover Stream asks for registration with Paypal. Why not. So I tried and I get to an internet side that allows me to open eMails-Accounts... I don't know further. Do you?

    I think more and more people are starting to realize just how much potential coverflow has now.

    Since you brought it up I wanted to add my two cents here.

    Some other improvements to coverflow which i think would be great.

    - Back covers as well on single album click or playlists for that album.

    - Here is an idea i saw before:  link the iOS remote app to coverflow so we can move coverflow artwork remotely DIRECTLY from iOS.

    So just like how we can remotely change the volume settings and have it be reflected in iTunes from iOS, allow this same affect to be done with artwork as well.

    - Make coverflow art also a part of itunes match. So we can match artwork to high quality covers and even back covers just like matching songs.

    And the best part is this could probably easily done by using the Tineye API
