My Dashboard has become really slow. It's gradually got worse. At first, I put it down to Time Machine backups going on in the background (which I've noticed does seem to slow down connectivity), but now it's barely working at all.

I've got 14 active widgets: I suppose the two I use most frequently are the calculator and a currency converter. When I open Dashboard, the first widget, iSat Pro, a system diagnostic, opens in about 2-3 seconds. The clock will display the correct time, but seems frozen (the red second hand doesn't move), the calendar will display the correct date. Nothing else begins working for several minutes now. I don't really know how long before they all become active, because I've usually given up waiting after about 10 minutes.

Having searched other threads on the same topic, I've tried a couple of things: I created a new Guest account and tried opening the Dashboard in that: it works instantly.

Secondly, I went to my Library folder to delete ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.dashboard.client, and some other files that have been reccommended to trash, such as:

com.apple.finder

com.apple.dock.plist

com.apple.dashboard.plist

etc.

But, I don't have any of these files on my system...????

In every other respect, my Mac works fine: no other problems whatsoever, it's just the Dashboard.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Mac Pro 2.93Ghz, ATI Radeon HD 4870, 30, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 12GB RAM

Your problem is located in that one user account

Because those are in the ~/Library/Preferences folder

Run through this list of fixes, if you can't solve it, backing up data, creating another admin and delete/recreate the problem account #17 will likely work as a last resort.

Use the free Easy Find, Spotlight isn't perfect.

    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11076/easyfind

Still not there, then run through the Steps, finally #17 is a delete and recreate the user account method to get default files back.
