The discussion on album artists I read on this forum left me confused.

Let me first state what I think iTunes means to be understood:

In popular music three types of albums exist according to iTunes

1. an album with all songs by the main artist.

Here the concept of 'album artist' is superfluous; just fill out in get/info title song and artist.

2. a compilation album with different artists for each song; this is the extreme casus; personally I define an album as a compilation album when two or more      artists perform separately on that album. Here you specify in get/info 'part of a compilation; 'album artist' is not required.

3. an album by an (main) artist with one or more guest appearances; this ranges from one duet to complete duet albums.

For this type of album 'album artist' is meant; for all songs on the album you specify in get/info 'album artist' as the main artist, and in get/sort specify in      'sort artist' also the main artist. In get/info 'artist' is of course the main artist & guest artist given.

Now applying this system and employing the column browser with genre, artists and albums, listing all the songs in my iTunes library, I noticed some strange effects with 1% of the artists.

After clicking an artist in the artist list, the related albums are listed on the top right and the related songs in the list down under.

In a number of cases an artist has a guest on one of his albums.

Sometimes (in 1% of the cases) the name of the artist in the artist list was replaced by the artist & guest artist name of one of the songs on one of their albums, a couple of times the first song, but not always

I'll try to add a screenshot of the iTunes window, but it doesn't work as yet.
