Limit is set in conjunction with wireless carriers. You have to use wifi

to download bigger apps. Or download using iTunes on your computer

and then transfer to the iPhone.

Ok I have this problem also, but it used to then sit in the background and actually let me purchase the app, even though it is >50mb.

Now it just gives me the error, and doesn't allow me to even buy the app!!

Most frustrating especially if you see a nice game free, go to download it, get the error, and by the time you get to your wifi or itunes, its back to full price.

Any way around this little pain in the *** way of doing things??

No. There is no way around the limit.

Is there a way to 'Purchase' the app, and download it later. I used to do this no problem - what changed?

Is there a setting that can let me purchase large apps so that I can just download them later?

At the moment it just flat refuses to purchase the app, or register that you wanted to purchase when using the ipads Itunes.

I agree that this is silly, I'm with 3UK and get completely unlimited data on my Tariff.

It's a pain having to find a WiFi point just to download an app. Especially when sometimes, my 3G is faster than some public WiFi points

Another silly thing is the fact that when I'm out with a Mate, I can tether to his iPhone and download apps via WiFi over his 3G connection

WiFi/3G dongles also work. But that's beside the point

Maybe if they gave you a warning before downloading.

ie. "This application exceeds 50MB. do you wish to download using your dataplan or later via WiFi"
