Connect the phone to your computer.
In iTunes 11 on your computer, click on the iPhone botton. If it isn't showing click on the Library button, then the iPhone button.
Click on the Info tab along the top.
Check the box next to "Sync Contacts" and choose an app on your computer to sync with. Make sure there is at least one contact in that app already.
Do the same for "Sync Calendars" if you want to.
Click the "sync" button. This will perform a 2 way sync between the apps on your computer and the apps on your iphone, as well as syncing any music or apps that you have selected.

Yes, iCloud sycing and iCloud backup are two different things.
Just like iTunes syncing and iTunes backup are different.
When you sync to iCloud, it simply stores that info and you can access it from any device. So for example, I use an iPhone and an iMac. I keep my contacts in sync between both devices. I can also create reminders or notes on my iMac and they show up automatically on my iPhone.
Backups are a whole different story. They're backups of your device which are stored on Apple's servers and you can access them when you need them.

I hardly have anything on my phone 100 pictures, 28 apps, no music or videos. 5.6gb of other data. I do the restore put stuff back on, iTunes says there's less then a gb of other now, great! Hours later I go to back up iCloud and it's saying I have 6.2 gb of data used up! Impossible! I delete messages etc still! 5gb of data this doesn't make any sense to me!

What doesn't make sense?
If you have 6.2GB of data used up on iCloud, it means that you already have stuff on it, like backups, documents, data, or mail.
The problem you're having is not the same as the problem we're having.
To delete the data that's taking up space in your iCloud account, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage.
Now click on the backup at the top, then click on delete backup.
After that, you can delete all the documents and data by going into each one, tapping the Edit button and then Delete All.

It's not mail, document etc. even if you switch that all off on your iCloud it will make no difference. Look I'm not wasting my time on this. Apple have advised me that the instructions I have given is too risky. Maybe it is a bit extreme but that's the way I've done it....and it works....trial and error. Ultimately back everything up. And all music and apps are stored under ur username. Which some people on here don't realise. Lol.
I'm not here to mess anyone's iPhones up.

Ohkay I'm shocked..!!

It only worked if you never try to play music again.

Lawrence....like the majority of people on this discussion, many really haven't got a clue. I've gone thru most of these comments and laughed it off. They don't make sense. I mean ur comments were totally pointless. And this one shows you have no knowledge at all.
Copy and paste the music into iTunes if its all cd back ups. If its all purchased from iTunes sign in and re download it. Like apps, u won't get charged!!!!

Did you even look at which post Lawrence was replying to? It certainly doesn't show he has no knowledge at all.
He's replied to a guy who's clearly tried the "swipe the music to delete" trick. That guy's replied to the guy advising people to try that...
If you'd read through most of the comments, you too should know that the swiping music and deleting trick that "dhruv.chopra92" has tried, does not work properly. It causes problems with music playback like many many people have come back to state after trying that trick.

Talk about pointless ... clearing out your iTunes library and then re-populating it does nothing to cure an inflated Other on your iOS device. I guess we can chalk your post up as another ill-advised thing to try, like swiping across the Music usage in Settings (which is what Lawrence was commenting on).

There are 462 messages in this thread; if you read a few you will learn what to do (and what not to do) about it. Don't take the advice of deleting your music, unless you don't want music on your phone, however.

I'm sure I'll get read the riot act for asking about this, as I'm sure it's been answered many times. Thing is, I don't have 3 hours to read through all the posts, arguments and snide remarks
I just replaced my 4S with a 5. While setting up and "restoring" all my info, I noticed that I had over 6gb of "other" in there. I only have one album on there, no pictures or videos (I deleted them from my phone once they were uploaded to iphoto). I purged my emails and only have 3 texts. So my question is.... "what the **** is all the other stuff?!" I'm attempting a restore as we speak. My question though is....If I'm using a back up from 20 minutes ago won't all the "other" be included in that?
If I do another restore, but this time set it up as new, how do I get all my apps and contacts back on the phone? I don't use the icloud
Help is appreciated. Thanks
